No Vacancy – The innkeeper looks back.
I appreciate entirely the truth of your comments. But I cannot help feeling that you are being a little severe. There were, after all, extenuating circumstances. The holiday season is always heavy and we were quite booked out, and (we must face the facts) In business, you can’t afford to make exceptions for any young fellow who spins a hard luck story.
I felt very sorry for his wife, of course, but you can’t have women having babies all over your hotel. I’ve got a living to make. At least I gave them a roof, which is more than anyone else did. I would ask you to bear that in mind.
If we’d known, of course, at the time, he could have had our room. We would have been honoured – But how am I supposed to recognise God when he comes asking for help in places where I don’t expect to find him ?
